Senen Ubina

Senen Ubiña was born a twin in Santander, Spain in 1923. His father, a colonel in the Spanish army, died in battle in the Spanish Civil War when the boys were very young. Senen, his mother and brother moved to Barcelona, where he grew up during the time of Franco. They spent a lot of time in Paris, where his mother’s family was from. Senen launched into the world of the arts in Europe in the late 1940s and 1950s. He started as a commercial artist doing figurative drawing. He had his first show in New York in 1955. As time passed, his work evolved to the more abstract, gaining him places in many prestigious permanent art collections. Some of the highlights of his career include winning the Gold Medal at the 1984 Biennale in Alexandria, Egypt, as well as inclusion in important shows, such as The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, in New York, The Modern Art Museum in Madrid, Spain, The Biennale in Venice, and The Museum of Art in Houston, Texas among others. Today, he resides with his wife, Joy in Manhattan, where he also has his studio. His body of work includes painting, drawing and sculpture.
