Materials:
oil on canvas
Size Notes:
canvas: 34 by 27 in.; 87.6 by 70 cm.
Edition:
The artist of this charming Holy Family drew influences from Tintoretto and artists within his close circle. It shares visual affinities with a Virgin and Child of circa 1545 in the Museo del Castelvecchio in Verona,1 a work attributed to Tintoretto by Rossi2 but more recently to the artist's circle by R. Echols and F. Ilchman.3 In addition, the head of Saint Joseph in the present work can be compared to the head of the same figure in an unfinished Holy Family with Saint John the Baptist today in the Yale Art Gallery, a work attributed by Echols and Ilchman to a studio hand.4

Markings:
The canvas appears to be thinly lined and is stable on its stretcher. There are modern wooden battens (0.5 inch) edging the perimeter of the stretcher. The image reads strongly beneath an old and discolored varnish, and the surface is dirty. There is a network of stable craquelure throughout, and there is some old stabilized and retouched lifting in the upper right background. There appears to be an old repair in the lower right corner, and a few scattered small spots of old restoration that have discolored and are visible to the naked eye. Inspection under UV reveals a milky varnish that impedes some inspection. More recent restoration is visible scattered in the aforementioned spots of restoration, some strokes along the upper edge to address frame abrasion, a few strokes near the center of the right edge, one spot in the upper left corner and two spots in the head of Joseph. Other small spots scattered here and there in the figures. There may be an older campaign of restoration beneath the varnish. Offered in a simply carved gilt frame.
