The lining is stable and strong, but appears to have became detached from the original canvas, since this is projecting along each side of a vertical split (not yet a tear) on the front, and signs of raised craquelure elsewhere. The painted surface sits under a layer of old discoloured varnish, and is beautifully preserved, with very little retouching visible in either natural or ultra-violet light: what there is is in the shadows to the extreme left of the composition. Ideally, this painting should be refined and gently cleaned, but is stable, and could hang as is in its shiny modern giltwood frame - which could however be improved upon.
