McIntyre, New Haven and London, IV, 1979, pp. 1158-1160), for 30 gns. (price recorded by Farington and by Elisabeth Inglis Jones in a manuscript list based on the Payne Knight papers), and then probably on display at Downton Castle, Shropshire (E.W. Brayley and J. Briton, The Beauties of England and Wales.., London, VI, 1808, p. 553: 'The interior of Downton Castle is fitted up with great taste and elegance; and some of the apartments are decorated with a few select pictures by the most eminent masters'), and thus not known to John Smith when compiling his catalogue raisonné of the works of Van Dyck published in 1831; and by descent at Downton Castle and elsewhere to the vendor.
