( French, 1694 - 1752 )
The fortune teller
Materials:
oil on canvas
Size Notes:
canvas: 35 by 27 in.; 89 by 68.6 cm.
Edition:
The canvas is planar and stable with an old glue relining. There is a varnish which has yellowed and lost some of its gloss; under ultraviolet light it appears slightly uneven and quite milky, making it difficult to see if there are old restorations beneath. The paint layer is in very good condition, with areas of lively brushwork with impasto still evident throughout the canvas. The face of the third figure in the center has faded, it is likely that it was thinly painted to begin with and the layers of dirt in the varnish are also making it difficult to see. A clean would likely transform the picture, as it appears to be in very good condition beneath the dirty varnish. Offered in a carved giltwood frame.
