LOT DETAILS
Materials:
oil on canvas
Measurements:
28.35 in. (72.00 cm.) (height) by 35.63 in. (90.50 cm.) (width)
Condition:
The canvas is lined, the paint surface is dirty, and the varnish is discoloured. Much of the impasto paintwork, particularly in areas of foliage in the tree, remains intact. Retouching is visible along a horizontal crack in the paint surface possibly caused by an old tear approx. 27 cm. long in the sky, centre left. Other small areas of discoloured retouching are visible in both upper corners. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms these interventions, and reveals in addition retouching to two small scratches in the stomach and foot of the angel, each 3 cm. long, some fine retouchings throughout Hagar's red dress, and in the white cloth beside her, as well as small retouchings in the lower left corner, scattered along the left and upper margins, and in the sky. There are also two areas of restoration to previous damages in the tree trunk and one of the upper branches, the largest of which measures 2 x 2 cm. In overall fair condition, and will respond well to cleaning and updated restoration. "In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective, qualified opinion. Prospective buyers should also refer to any Important Notices regarding this sale, which are printed in the Sale Catalogue. NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF BUSINESS PRINTED IN THE SALE CATALOGUE."
