Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac, Salzburg, Private Collection, Switzerland, ...The form of the artistic ideological criticism, appropriate for democratic societies, corresponds to the civil disobedience in so far as resistance is exerted via objects, which show what it means today to be a subject, and which contradictions are associated with it. The suitable form for this is comedy, not tragedy. Wurm is a master of this art and simply an outstanding sociologist and psychologist as well, who expects self-awareness from us in the light of his sculptures. This opens up spaces for being other, possibilities of new alignments of things beyond nationalistic self-affirmation. Since the task that is approaching us will probably be to carry further the utopian banner of cosmopolitanism against its nationalistic despisers. Art and philosophy can make a contribution to this, preferably in the ever productive interplay of thought and object., Markus Gabriel, from: “Anstoß, Widerstand, Gegenstand – Erwin Wurm zwischen Fichte und Neuem Realismus” –, from the aforementioned literature
