Listed and reproduced in:, Gerbert Frodl, Hans Makart, Werkverzeichnis der Gemälde, Verlag der Provinz, Belvedere Werkverzeichnisse, vol. 3, Vienna 2013, p. 196, no. 340, Catalogued in:, Wilhelm Lauser (ed.), Allgemeine Kunstchronik, Illustrierte Zeitschrift für Kunst, Kunstgewerbe, Musik, Theater und Literatur, 11, 45 (5. 11. 1887), 1887, p. 1132; Gerbert Frodl, Hans Makart, Monographie und Werkverzeichnis, Residenz Verlag, Salzburg 1979, CR no. 382, p. 403 Gerbert Frodl thus writes: “The plafond was created in order to decorate the so-called ‘Casino’ in the Vienna Künstlerhaus, which was built as a meeting place for artists and their friends. In April 1877, Makart gave this work as a gift to the Künstlergenossenschaft [Artists’ Association], of which he was a member, and of which he would also be president in 1881 and 1882. A lady in an Old Dutch costume sits in the company of Cupid in a garden landscape with an obelisk and vase. In the blue sky above, alongside other birds, an owl may be seen – certainly as an allegory of wisdom and erudition – and an eagle, ,as an attribute of ingenuity and vision.” (Gerbert Frodl, Werkverzeichnis der Gemälde, Verlag Bibliothek der Provinz, Belvedere, Vienna 2013, CR 340, p. 196
