THE TEMPTATION OF ST. ANTHONY (HOLLSTEIN 10; NEW HOLLSTEIN (THE VAN DOETECUM FAMILY) 216)
Edition:
Enthused by popular reading such as Jacobus de Varagineâ??s Golden Legend, Bosch painted St. Anthony on at least fifteen occasions. Stories of the tortured saint, who was plagued by Satan in the wilderness, appealed to the Early Netherlandish artistâ??s wild imagination. Printed by Northern Europeâ??s premier publishing house, this vivid work includes twenty-two scenes of temptation, each inspired by Boschâ??s fantastical imagery.
