Literature:
Otto Djaya was an artist who has witnessed the many upheavals of Indonesia’s tumultuous history. He developed a distinct style early in his oeuvre and struck to it even during the time when the ‘Moo-Indies” genre was popular. The daily scenes of Indonesian life found their way into his paintings. “Bidadari Dan Pertapa” is a mythical illustration of Javanese religious beliefs, set against the 9th century temple of Borobudur.
